Review by Erwin Van Dijk - Date Of The Event : 30 July 2009

Amersfoort is the second largest city in the province of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Despite having more than 144,000 living within the city borders this city does not have a professional stage for live music. Which is strange when you consider the fact that even small farmer villages in my country have a venue.                                                                                               De Kelder started from a long tradition of squatting buildings. Many venues in The Netherlands started that way, like the Paradiso which is now a very important venue. De Kelder kept small. Unlike the name suggests it is currently not located in a basement (= kelder) like the Camden Underworld (the Fire Department of Amersfoort would not allow that) but in a former industrial building. While this building is probably legal it still looks like a squatted place. Which makes you wonder just how important live music is in this city.

Walls of Jericho is hardcore band from Detroit, USA. They must be one of the hardest working bands in the world. Candace is one of the best singers in the genre. Covered with tattoos like Kat von D and a throat like a hammer drill. Gigs usually end up in large mosh and circle pits and stage diving is mandatory.

This is the third Walls of Jericho gig in a few months in Holland, the other two were at the city of Dordrecht and the Zwarte Cross Festival but there was no sign of Walls fatigue – the Kelder was not sold out but there was barely room to get your beer with all those fans inside.                                                                                                                                                Walls of Jericho had done a gig at the Zwarte Cross Festival for some 120,000 visitors and were also expected at Wacken Open Air this week.

At Zwarte Cross we received this news:

"Candace from WALLS OF JERICHO is set to miss a series of shows this week due to a family tragedy. A message from the band reads as follows:

Two days ago we received Info that a dear friend and a part of Candace’s family, Emery Keathley, member of Detroit’s Cold As Life, suffered a heart attack and did not make it. Emery was 29 and leaves behind a young son and another child on the way in 3 weeks. Due to these circumstances Candace got on a flight yesterday and went home to be there for her best friend, Emery’s wife, and her god son, in this time of tragedy.

Our thoughts are with both Stephanie and Candace and their respected families. In the mean time we will be doing the next 6 shows here in Europe with vocal contributions from our good friends in The Red Chord from both Guy and Gunface and with Chris Rawson (WOJ) also doing a few songs as well. We encourage anyone who comes to these next string of shows to get up on stage, if you know the songs, and scream your ass off with us. Also for these the rest of this tour we will have a donation jar for Emery’s family to help pay for the funeral cost.

Also for these the rest of this tour we will have a donation Jar for Emery's family to help pay for Funeral cost. ANY DONATIONS would be greatly appreciated!! They can be made through Paypal account Phone # 313.300.0466 or email kateymuffinbrain@yahoo.com.

Candace is doing everything she can to make it back on the tour in the next few days and we appreciate your patience and understanding this very sad and tragic situation.

THANK YOU

Walls of Jericho”

The Red Chord, the tour buddies of Walls of Jericho did things a lot better. I’ve met them before at the Hell on Earth tour last year and their music was still on the same high level as in Zaandam. Without changing shirts the singer of The Red Chord continued with Walls of Jericho (this must have smelled bad in the tour bus!)

Although women in rock and metal are more and more common these days there is still a large group of metalheads who thinks women are only good enough for entertainment backstage. This Walls of Jericho gig proved them wrong. A good singer is a good singer, man or woman.

The replacements

Guy and mostly Mike did a good job replacing Candace. Of course, they are not Candace. Replacing her would be like replacing Sharon den Adel by her husband or replacing Simone by Mark: an interesting experiment for one gig but not on a permanent base!

The day after Candace was back in Europe and on the Wacken stage.
