Interview By Eetu "Ene" Niskanen

Hey Natalie and thanks for accepting our interview!

Hey you and no problem :)

You are part of two brilliant doom metal bands, Shape of Despair and Depressed Mode, is it hard being part of them two at the same moment?

It's not hard at all actually. SOD don't crank albums out so often and we didn't made gigs so far. We did a few gig's with DM and hopefully we can do much more shows in the future.

Could you tell us something about your bandmates on both bands?

There's nothing to tell, except that they all are talent musicians. And some of SOD members are also my really longtime friends, we have knew each other for an fifteen years now.

Your voice is absolutely fantastic, have you had any vocal training?

Thank you, it's always good to hear that somebody like's it :). I started music academy when I was five years old and I was there for seven years, after that I took some singing lessons from different teachers, but not for long time. Maybe I should do it again, because nobody is so perfect, that he/she don´t have to practice.

Do you play any instruments, if you do how long have you played it/them?

Yeah, I play piano/keyboard and I took also guitar lessons for two years. I can play a basic beat on drums also, so maybe I can be a drummer in some band…anyone??? :D:D:D

How is it working and touring in bands full of males as the only female?

There haven't been any problems so far. Nowadays there is so many band's where is woman as a band member, so there is nothing special about it.

It has been quite some time since you released something with SoD but at the moment you are working on a 7'' vinyl, how is it going and when can we wait for release?

SoD is almost done with the songs, we record my parts next week. And I'm really not sure when it's gonna be ready :D Slow music, REALLY slow moves.

With Depressed Mode you released your second album ''For Death'' this year, how much work did it take to get it released?

It took almost one year and a half. In studio we were only two weeks.

On both of your bands your vocals are used very little comparing to the amount of growls, have you ever thought of having project with only your voice?

Yes I have and yes it's on progress.

What kind of music do you listen yourself and how often?

I listen almost all kind of music. Opeth, Satyricon, Zyclon, Emperor, Cannibal Corpse, Dead Can Dance, Portishead, there is a few band for example. And I found a stoner rock few years ago J It was about time, hehheh.

Who are your biggest influences?

There is so many really talent musicians, so it's hard to say who is the biggest influence. You can learn different stuff from different people.

What are your plans for the future?

Music, music and more music.

Both DM and SoD are called female fronted bands even with the huge amount of male vocals, what do you think yourself, are you female fronted bands?

Female fronted? Maybe it's only media opinion J I think that we are bands, and I am one of the band members. Nothing more and nothing less.

Well then, there are tons of female fronted bands out there, how do you keep unique?

In my opinion, we just make our music and we don't have time to think about how unique we are. We are what we are, like it or not.
