Meden Again - "Erevos Aenaon" (2011)

Greece’s Meden Agan formed in 2005. After releasing a couple of well received demos – which hinted at a world of promise for Meden Agan – the band has issued their full-length debut "Erevos Aenaon" and it showcases the bands impressive operatic/progressive/symphonic metal. Beginning with the slow build of opener "Black Sky", "Erevos Aenaon" offers a relentless metal cocktail that incorporates some of the best element of different metal genres, like prog, symphonic and operatic. While vocalist Iliana has the ability to be as operatic as they come, she does not simply rely on that style. She has a lot of depth and character in her voice and doesn’t over use the operatic style simply for the sake of showing what she can do vocally; whatever suits the song is what she does. A perfect example of this is the melodic mid-tempo second song "All Seems Lost". This is just a great track with some of the best elements of Meden Agan coming to the forefront. The next track "Blinded by Faith" is a great indication as to how diversified Meden Agan can be as the band brings up the heaviness and tempo. The main feature of this song is the crushingly heavy opening riff from Diman, some prog-like keyboard work courtesy of Apostolos, some nice choir-style vocals on the chorus and a blazing guitar solo. "Tribute to Life" is accentuated by another heavy riff and some greater choir based vocals. Some more highlights that be found on "Erevos Aenaon" includes: "Dissolve into Grey", the brutally heavy "Nemesis" which is the only song to feature male grunt vocals and the ballad "Universe Unseen". With "Erevos Aenaon" , Meden Agan has more than stepped up to the plate and proven that the buzz they created on their previous demos was well deserved. Meden Agan has the look and feel of a band who are ready to ascend to the next level of the metal hierarchy.
