 Interview By Lindz Riot

A Manzana a day keeps the doctor away! All the way from Finland comes a band with a fresh look on rock and punk music that is heavily based on the golden years of the 90’s rock revolution. With a ton of touring and writing under their belt they are a non stop train of passion that should soon be dominating stages everywhere. Here at Femme Metal we’ve the chance to talk with their sassy lead singer Piritta and hear how their Journey has been so far.

Welcome to Femme Metal Webzine Piritta! Thanks for taking the time to do this interview with us. To start off how long have you been in Manzana and how has your experience in this band been different from you past projects?

I have been in Manzana for 7 years, and it has been different in a way that we have made three albums and 4 European tours and been in the media, so it is the band that I have got to taste a bit of the real rock ‘n roll life. My other bands, except for Villieläin, have been more like artistic projects, just doing the kind of songs we happen to feel like. Manzana is more like work, even tough the writing part is still fun and very creative.

Good stuff. So regarding those big festivals and tours that you’ve played the past while, how do you find the touring life and being in the road? Is it fun or hectic?

Being on the road is like a drug. It is so hard to come back and look at the walls, you just miss it all immediately. On the road you feel alive every minute and you never know what happens next, people talk and laugh and show their emotions, cry, have fun, fall in love around you. The normal life seems so dead, after you start liking the peace again. It is also very tiring, especially if you get the flu for example, its hell counting the shows, trying to rest when everybody’s partying around you, and fearing of loosing your voice. After first longer tour, nobody is the same, it’s a big thing.

From what you have seen so far, how has the response been to your newest release "Industrial Hippies" been?

Pretty good, people say it’s musically our best album and I agree. This is the first album for me, when I knew exactly what I wanted to sound like. And I think the punk touch and more easy going songs, but rough sound is the best for us now. We’ve had good reviews and frost tattoos on lyrics also done! I got them by mail. It warms my heart so much that the songs mean so much to someone.

As a group you all have stated that you are heavily influenced by 90’s music. What are some of your favourite artist of that time?

I think the common ground for us is definitely grunge. We all loved Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pear Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More and all those bands. For me there is also Skunk Anansie, Guano Apes, Hole and 4 Non Blondes. But it’s not like we listen to grunge every day anymore but the big starter influence was definitely in those bands.

Are their any artist from the 90’s that you would consider guilty pleasures?

Well, I have to say I also liked some hip hop by then because it was not mainstream then and I also hung around with some people with loose pants by then but then I turned it into liking skate punk like Pennywise hahaha.

Do you think a big musical movement in rock will happen again like the one we saw in the 90’s?

I don’t think so because of the internet people get new thing faster and new things never grow into anything that unite and big, people just take what they need in their little groups and go their own ways. It would also take a new "Jesus" like Kurt Cobain, and the person would also have to be ready to die.

That is actually the best analogy I’ve heard yet! So when did music start for you? At what age did you start singing and who inspired you?

I saw Tina Turner on TV when I was 9 and I knew I was a rock singer. Then I discovered Linda Perry of The 4 Non Blondes and I learned to sing over top of her album. Then I got into a band and after three weeks I was on stage wondering what happened!

Haha sounds like it happened so fast! Other than Manzana is there any other musical styles you would like to try?

I am working on my own songs at the moment, it’s just a side hobby but I like trying more like a singer-songwriter style, very simple and quiet, just real instruments and more effort on lyrics and feeling. I also like flamenco, it would be great to learn more. In Manzana I want to growl and scream even more. I love that stuff! It makes me feel so strong.

What are your hopes for the future of the band?

New albums, new videos, new tours! We are constantly looking for tours, would be awesome to get a good supporting tour with a bigger band now. And we are booking shows and our own tours in Europe for this summer again. Also, new songs all the time? Henkka has made some nice loops again, we’ll get on the as soon as possible. We play shows all the time, it’s good =)

How do you and the boys in the band get along? Would you consider yourself one of the guys?

No, I’m not a guy! They are like my brothers and I’ve always had brothers, so it’s natural. I’ve always worked mainly with men but I’ve met plenty of rock chicks that have no trouble on the road. But you have to be a bit of a camper, not to care about the cold and the dirt and not to whine about someone not liking you all the time. But that goes for the guys too hahaha.

Haha so true! Do you play any instruments? If so, for how long have you been playing them?

I’ve played piano since I was 7, that’s my main instrument. I also play some guitar and bass but very badly.

I’m sure you sound just fine :D I noticed on your official website, you were born October 11th which makes you a Libra star sign. Do you feel you fit that star sign and all its characteristics?

I think I fit the Libra characteristics, I have two worlds that are totally different and I try to balance between them as a lifetime sentence. I am diplomatic, I don’t like to argue and I never talk shit or lie. But I am a rising Aries and I like that. After 30 you start being more like your rising sign and I notice that I’m getting rid of the never ending harmony seeking and being too kind - shit of the Libra, I just do what I want in a quiet way and don’t give a toss if someone objects.

Either than music do you have any weird hobbies or unique talents you would like to share with the world?

I knit socks and chop wood to heat the house, those are my hobbies! And if I could, I would keep chicken. And I will, one day. Then I would get the best organic eggs to my omelettes every day =) .

Haha sounds like a healthy farm girl kinda life ;)  Well thanks for doing this interview with Femme Metal Piritta! All the best to you and Manzana.

Thank YOU =) <3
